The Late Sir James Lamont
July 31, 1913
Sir, -It may be of interest to recall that the late Sir James Lamont's grandfather (James Lamont of Knockdow, Argyllshire) was the first to introduce to the West of Scotland the feeding of sheep on turnips in the field. Special mention is made of this in the "old Statistical Account of Scotland", published in 1791: "The only person in Inverchaolain parish who has paid particular attention to farming is James Lamont of Knockdow, who, under many disadvantages of soil and climate, raises green crops equal to any in the West of Scotland. He manures his ground strongly, sometimes with lime, sometimes with a mixture of lime and earth, as it suits his land. His returns of bere are from 8 to 10 bolls an acre, and of oats from 6 to 8. He has practised with success what was never before known in this country, however frequent in southern parts of Scotland
