    Notes
    • James McLean went to Switzars. He took the Dome accom.house, later Dvidson's, and assisted settlers by6 boat in the 'old man flood' of 1874.Then,with Robert Hutton, he went saw milling in Waikaia Bush, and purchased the first threshing plant in the district. It was in this period that his wife died & he lost four fingers of his right hand in a mill. He had terrific power in that thumb; he could even twist wire with it.In 1887 he leased a block of Mt.Nicholas land & cleared it of rabbits. There he built a large hut & brought his 3 daus. from Waikaia via Kingston, on the P.S. Antrim, to the Half Way Bay wharf which serves Birchgrove.
He brought 500 ewes. His merino wool sold for 6p. a pound.captain Howell had Birchgrove Station but he was eaten out by rabbits. James bought it at auction
In 1895 Burchgrove carried 4,000 merinos & 100 head of cattle. The wool brought 8p. a pound & fat whethers sold for 15 shillings each.Birchgrove was burnt down.He had by this time boughtMcAlister's Flat & he built awooden house, sheds & quarters at the Half Way bay. After being at Birchgrove for a number of years he sold it to his 2 sons Alex. & Angus. Then he & an older son , Jim, took up Greenvale run 7 miles past Waikaia , part of the Orama estate. He bought 3,000 sheep & with his 2 sons drove them over Dansy's Pass, through Wedderburn,Ida Valley, Roxburgh, and the sheep swam the Pomahaka River. At Greenvale he built a homestead and a wool & shearing shed & erected fences. He had up to 9,000 sheep. Here he lived with 2 of his daus.. In 190/1 wool was 1shilling a pound. Later the Routeburn Station ,Kinlock was taken up by James & his son Duncan was put in as manager. For a while Greenvale & birchgrove were worked as 1 property.
