item 5: Letter from Arch. McCallum addressed to his brother
"William Mac Cormick / Puslinch / Lot 19th First Concession
/ near Galt / upper Canada / America", and dated
Campbeltown [Argyll, Scotland], 3rd March 1843. Letter
tells of the economic situation in and around Campbeltown
which is forcing many to think of going to America (i.e.
Canada), the author's suspicions about the discontentedness
of Puslinch Township residents, and of John Clark (who was
sitting in same room as author at time of writing) who was
having hassles in obtaining rights to land in Puslinch
Township due to the unreliability of his brother and of
Norman Ramsey who settled around Galt [Norman Ramsay listed
in Puslinch Twp. on 1851 Census] 2 pages, double sided.
Document is very fragile and has come away at the creases,
and portions are missing at time of accession. A note
written by the compiler and found with the letter reads,
"A delicate leter 1843 from his brother-in-law in scotland
McCallum to my paternal great grandfather William in
Puslinch, pleading for assistance for John Clark, my
maternal great great grand-father who was having difficulty
in getting title to his late brother James' land in
Puslinch".
