Duncan Smith was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1912 with his wife (nee Agnes McMillan), and five children, Rachel, Archie, Allan, James and Margaret. He spent the first year working on the railway bridge at Maclennan before taking up land in Purakauiti on the coast overlooking Long Point.

Section 22, Block 10, 121 acres, and later Section 21, Block 10, 96 acres. In about 1928 he took over Section 14, Block 9, 104 acres.
