On the battlefield at Garvie, were erected two cairns, a large and a small one, regarding which the Ecc. Stat, of the parish says : " There are two tumuli supposed to have been
raised by the Norwegians, but have not yet been opened (1790-91), unfortunately both are now wholly removed and all that can indicate where they were, is their sites marked on the recent survey maps." The little cairn was a small mound of earth. I was informed by the late Mrs. Cameron, Ardaphubil, daughter of Mr. Archibald Currie, by whom this mound was removed about ninety-five years ago, that two stone coffins were found on the top of it. The cairnmore or large cairn when entire was an immense heap of water-worn stones, apparently taken from Garbh Amhain, which passed its base. It covered the top of a gravelly knoll, in the middle of the field, under the present house of Garvie, and was of a circular form, surrounded by an earthen sunk fence. The first known encroachment on this sacred pile was made by Mr. Currie, who took a great quantity of stones out of it to build a stone dyke, fully half a mile long and five feet high, and which remains there yet. Mr. Walter Black, Mr. Currie's successor, made a breach in the south-west side for building stones. His servants, Donald Black and Stephen Anderson, found in its margin a stone coffin about two feet long, and covered with a large flag, containing two large human thigh bones. Mr. Cunningham, of Craigends, who succeeded Mr. Black, also removed a great quantity of stones to build dykes and the present farm steading
    at Garvie.
