    William Matchard appears in the Register of Poor for Campbeltown, entry 407. He was aged 53 then and born in Ireland. He was a stone-breaker and suffering from influenza and received 2/6d a week. He and his wife Margaret Mathieson were living in Harvey's Lane, Campbeltown, when he was registered on 11/12/1866. They had two sons living with them, James (12) and Joseph (9).

    There is no such couple in Campbeltown. There was however an Archibald Campbel married to a Christian McIntyre and the 1792 census of the Duke of Argyll lists them at Knockriachmore, Kilkerran parish as follows:
