While Elison Margaret Brown was born in London, her mother Grace was Scottish according to the 1861 Census. Her mother's maiden name is given on Elison Margaret's birth registration in error as Ramsay. Name Robertson is confirmed by her death certificate and the birth registration of her brother John Brown, also born in Westminster. John Brown (senior) was a plasterer by trade but was not at home on the night of the Census. John Brown and Grace Robertson were married 7 February 1842 at St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh.
